Outline programme

Week 1 (week beginning 6 March): Worship: what is it for? Led by Diana

Where do our worship patterns come from? What’s distinctive about the Anglican tradition? What’s the Lectionary? Do our different traditions unite or divide us?

Week 2 (week beginning 13 March): Music in Worship Led by Katherine

“Christians do it with singing” – vocal music is unique to our faith

Plainsong explained: how is it performed?

Hymns - do they divide us or unite us? Which are the earliest hymns? Are they good theology (do they speak truthfully about God) ? Are worship songs suitable in church? Do poems make good hymns?

Congregational singing – as praise; as proclamation; as devotion; as an expression of community

Week 3: (week beginning 20 March): The Daily Office  led by Jane

Who says morning and evening prayer, where and when? Where did the BCP orders come from? Why are the Psalms used? What other forms of daily prayer are in use?

Week 4: (week beginning 27 March): A range of worship for all led by Clifford

Worship for different “audiences”, age groups and interest groups: Iona, Northumbria, CMS, Taizé communities; international Anglican liturgies (Kenya, South India);

Inclusive and family-friendly worship: all-age worship; Godly Play; Messy Church; Fresh Expressions

What “works” for us and why?

Week 5 (week beginning 3 April): The Holy Communion led by Ali

What is the significance of the different names for the Communion service? What is Communion for, and what do we believe about it?

What is actually going on at the altar during the service?

How should we prepare for it (traditions of fasting, confession etc.)?

Who is eligible to receive it?
